Engineer – Train Control, HMI & Air Brakes
The Train Controls Team is made up of the Train Control aspects of the overall Engineering Organization at Wabtec. These engineering groups contain dynamic set of systems that are on the cutting edge of technology in the Transportation Industry, supporting the design of a diverse set of critical functions on the locomotive from Air Brake to Human Machine Interface to automatic train protection systems.
In this role the engineer will work with customers, various suppliers, engineering functions and/or industry agencies to identify and capture requirements and execute the design. This group is made up of nearly two dozen sub-systems and components as well as being the overall system integrator for customer-supplied equipment for the locomotive. The engineer will utilize experience and expertise to solve problems, develop and execute objectives for self and others, and effect short-term and some long-term business goals.
Understand system functional requirements, define sub-system design requirements and interfaces for various control systems for the locomotive including Air Brake, Human Machine Interface (HMI), Event Recorder, Protocol Translator, Signaling, Trainline control, On-board monitoring and diagnostics applications.
Own projects from conceptual design through final validation, developing detailed design and troubleshooting skills through interaction with the locomotive and HITL Simulators
Execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements
Design, integrate, implement and validate Locomotive Controls subsystem functions, Air Brake system and Human Machine Interface for locomotive, suitable for application in both English and non-English speaking environments
Define subsystem requirements to control applications, embedded software architecture, and hardware architecture to meet system-level functional requirements.
Specify interfaces among control functions within software, and among hardware components
Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews
Prepare invention disclosures to protect the technology that provides a competitive advantage to the business
Lead/Support investigation, root-cause identification, and resolution of reliability issues including communicating to a wider business audience
Interact with internal and external customers, vendors, and industry agencies pursuing and own technical interaction with a supplier for targeted areas of Train Control
Support proposals, controls, software, simulator, manufacturing, test and field services team
Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments to management
Participate on teams assigned to address organizational initiatives and other business needs
Participate in process improvements and simplification initiatives to improve quality and productivity
Qualification / Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Electronics or Instrumentation Engineering
About 3 to 5 years of relevant industry experience
At least 1 year of design experience in a control engineering domain.
Experience with serial and/or Ethernet communication
Experience with Human Machine Interface and human factors analysis for embedded systems
Experience in airbrake system and airbrake control design for rolling stock
Ability and willingness to work “hands-on” in test labs and on locomotives with high HP (1000 KVA), medium voltage (2 KV) and high current (10 KA) systems
Ability and willingness to travel as required
Familiarity with train control / TCMS systems used on long haul locomotives
Experience with requirements management tools like DOORS
Experience with system and component level validation testing (PPAP)
Experience with transportation/locomotive systems, control, diagnostics, design and test
Experience in working in cross-functional environment
Experience with Design For Six Sigma (DFSS) tools (i.e. FMEA, Score Cards) and DMAIC tools (Root Cause Analysis, Problem Solving Tools)
Strong technical aptitude, including applicable engineering tools and systems
Solid oral and written communication skills
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
Ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks
MS Office proficiency (Excel, PowerPoint, word etc)
